Mia helped to bake her first apple pie today! She took a little catnap right when the apple pie was going in the oven.
We were up bright and early and had the apples peeled and sliced by 7:00. We baked a caramel praline apple pie, a 3-layer pumpkin cheesecake pie, and a regular pumpkin pie. The last pumpkin pie probably wouldn't have gotten completed if Mom Mom and Grandpa hadn't popped by to see us. Mia was getting a bit bored with the baking business. She finally fell asleep while Grandpa was holding her. Note her sleep position... it's our favorite for afternoon naps!
So now I can say I've baked an apple pie for the first time. I'm not a pie eater, but I found these new recipes in Dierberg's November cooking magazine and thought I'd give them a try. It was fun with Mia there with me! I plan to spend lots of time with her in the kitchen, just like I used to do when I was little. And I used my Grandma C.'s old apple pie dish... so of course I had to tell Mia about how her great grandma used to cook and bake everyday. Wow, I don't think I could do all that my grandma used to do everyday. Teaching 3rd graders all day is tiring, but I can't imagine having a house full of kids while helping my husband run a business downstairs and cooking a full dinner with dessert every night for my family and employees. I'm sure this old pie dish could really tell some stories!
Happy Thanksgiving!
